PVP and Cyber-bullying

Recommended Posts

When does PVP become cyber-bullying?  Before you label me as a whiner, that's not the intent of this post.  I know that PVP is a substantial part of this game and nearly all successful MMORPGs have a PVP component.  So I'm just posing the question, when does PVP surpass the developers intent and enter the realm of cyber-bullying?

So allow me to describe the situation - there is a player, which I will dub MicroP3nis (because of his obvious inadequacy issues), that haunts Viledon.  Now I can only assume this player has a full set of +12 Deltas, and I wouldn't be surprised if the gear was fully spanned and filled with R2 uni jewels.  Also assume all the accessories are the best possible for level 39 and the AP pet is probably level 40 and filled with chips.  It would be like one of the veteran endgame players stuffed into deltas.  So back to the original question - is getting killed by this player PVP or cyber-bullying?  Now I know that the majority of the players in the opposing faction are simply questing through to higher levels.  Most are probably wearing at least a few pieces of the Base Delta set gifted at level 30 and using jewels picked up in Bitterstone Core as they leveled up.  Suffice it to say, Mr. Micro can one-shot the majority of players he runs across in Viledon and (for the very unfortunate) players that match against him in battlegrounds.  He can even ride into the middle of the enemy base, kill the player mocking him (me) and ride out again before the mob of guards can damage him below 50%.

Sure, the argument can be made, "If you don't like it then you can level up your gear, just like he did."  I'm sure the vast majority of players do not have the desire or the means to gear up a character like that.  But that is not the focus of this post - when does pvp become cyber-bullying? I would suggest the answer is in the kill to death ratio.  But how high does the ratio need to go? 10:1? 100:1? or even 1000:1?

I see in-game Wanted announcements all the time how the strongest endgame players get killed by the opposing faction.  And I'm sure that even after I've played for a year, I wouldn't be able to match these players.  But I'm pretty sure their kill to death ration isn't as high as Mr. Micro.

So I'm not expecting any changes to the game.  There have been players like Mr. Micro in every MMORPG that I have ever played.  Players like that help me realize that my RL is not so bad.  I can only imagine some of the horrors that have made people become cyber-bullies, and I pity them.  But I'm also glad that I don't need to validate my life according to a digital one.  So have fun killing the crap out of me in PVP.

It shouldn't have get to 10:1 to declare bullying.  If there was someone really well geared knowingly attacking someone that significantly weaker and repetitively, then that would definitely be bullying.  One should be able to figure out that the attacked player is undergeared after the first kill or two.  Heck, low max HP is an indicator of an undergeared player.  There should be players on the server that have well geared arkana in that tier that could be of help.

Of course, that bully could also be trying to provoke a mass pvp in that tier assuming their victims will call for help.

"Let's do massive pvp in vile!" would be far more effective

I feel with the game that any player who attacks others while they are trying to get things done that isn't part of a Boss or escort quest that the other faction needs to destroy(assuming that the individual can kill the escort alone) then the pvp is unwelcome and the individual shouldn't just attack them. That is assuming the the person farming doesn't make the first strike and attack the unfriendly player. Done once is being a jerk, done repetitively is being the biggest a-hole in the game. Those who play SW's I have noticed are the biggest offenders of attacking players unwanted and because of their fade they often catch players with their guards down for an easy kill. There are ways to ask for players to pvp with you and to respect those who decline.

Now having said that, I can also see players doing this to get achievements. The 200kill in one day achievement that can't always be obtained in BGs. Also, gaining RP is sometimes faster killing players who have a high rank and give more RP than the RP mobs. At the lower levels RP mobs don't give the same RP and the mobs in the higher levels, this could be asked to be changed so lower levels can gain RP at the same rate as players in the higher levels who farm RP with the RP mobs. There are other things like the wanteds.

But still for me when I want somebody to pvp with me and I can't message directly there are two ways to get this from them. Shouting with the players gamer tag asking for an opposing faction player to relay to said player to pvp with them and wait for somebody in  your faction to respond back with an answer. The other is to attack them. not kill them, to get them to attack you. That last method you have to be aware of your limitations while doing this because getting attacked while your defenses are down can result in your own death if they don't give you time to prep. I know you just attacked them, but if you did it with a low enough attack they know you want to play.

Those who seek out unsuspecting players and kill them repetitively I think you could video this players actions, put in a ticket asking that somebody tell them to stop. The GM or head GS might not do anything with the ticket or they could ask the player to back off you, but at least you tried to get somebody to help back you up. There are some players when this happens to them though call for back up to ask players to attack them back. I know there was a player who would play with one faction killing bosses for loot and when that boss was almost dead they would use their other character on the opposing faction to kill those around them so that when the boss died it was only them who got the loot. That behavior was stopped and should a player do this, I believe they will be forced to go play outside.

I used to attack players who bug the hell out of me who expected me to just roll over and give them a win or curtain items in a BG because they are the weaker between the two of us. When I refused, because I didn't gear myself to just roll over for the other person and I still have a desire to keep gearing my character they would get mad at me. Some calling me names or finding ways to give "payback" like waiting for me to almost get what I want and then leave the BG over and over. Like a tower in Janus or gold ball in Soccer pitch, they would watch till I was almost done and then leave. That frustrated me when they would do it every bg I entered with them, so I would find them in a pvp zone and attack them over and over. Though I prefer to pick fights with those of equal talent, I shouldn't be told I should just roll over for player in a BG because they want the win or want what I want when I am still trying to gear myself and my characters.

ΣvilTεrεsα you're such a booly. Time to make a WH to go smack your InsertHere toon

I wasn't going to name names. :S but I wish someone would make a toon to counter them.

But this brings me to a general observation.  The RGs seems to control the endgame most of the time.  Not saying that there are not some very strong FK's, but it seems that the Amara bosses are commonly farmed by RGs.  So that leaves a large number of FKs frustrated - so they make lower level toons and dominate the 29 and 39 BGs.  It's almost understandable, I can't tell you how many times I've signed up for Janus and there are 6 RGs and 0 FKs, until I get the message "There are not enough participants so Janus was cancelled."  And when FKs do sign up for BGs its nearly always a massacre.  So maybe I should make an FK alt and take them to BGs just to have a fair fight.
