Is not about Microsoft giving Windows for free or not.
It's about how bloated and how much resources Windows wastes.
Right now I got 8gb ram and 4-5gb (+other resources) are taken just by Windows.
My friend with 16gb ram wastes 8gb ram on his windows (the more resources you have the more Windows eats).
On Debian I waste just 150mb ram on the window manager.
