I agree with the OP, I know you have to "work" to get items in games, but sometimes real life makes it difficult, at night after work I am to tired to farm highland and when its weekend I dont have the gold to buy items and I can not compete, so I started to get bored and do other stuff, for example this weekend I prefer watching some series and playing a RTS with some old friends. If the money I invest in the game were more rewarding I can buy AP and enjoy the game more. Selling ECS is not good enought, maybe if your main currency is the american dollar it will be ok, because 20$ it is nothing, but for other countries its like x3 or x4 the value, so get just 8k gold is really bad, and then you will probably say if you dont have money why do you buy AP, well maybe my rate is x3.5 but thank god I have a good job and I can donate but I want more rewards for my money because it cost more for me. Fortification stones should be rare, but not just for rankings, how normal players are suppose to compete for example in arena, the problem with this system is that people who have everything get richer and powerful and the others have to farm highlands for hours and after that watch all their gold reduce to nothing while the other guy gets richer and continue to rank.
